About Us

Our Mission

As the English department of Bodrum Marmara College, we aim to instill in our students a love for the English language and literature and to raise them as self-confident, creative and critical thinkers. We aim to develop strong communication skills, increase their reading and writing abilities and enrich their cultural understanding. We aim to prepare our students for global challenges and opportunities while expanding their worldview through different literary works. To this end, we encourage our students to learn by interacting with each other, discussing current issues and using technology effectively.

Our English department is also committed to developing 21st century skills. These skills are developed to ensure that our students gain not only linguistic proficiency but also important skills such as digital literacy, creative thinking, problem solving and collaboration. Our students develop their ability to produce solutions together by doing group work in lessons, and learn to use technology effectively while conducting research. The role of technology in education is reinforced through projects and digital presentations. In addition, our students develop their language skills through an interdisciplinary approach, integrating with other subjects. For example, by conducting research related to Science or Geography lessons, our students have the opportunity to discuss the information they have learned from a linguistic perspective.

Course Structure and Teaching Approach

With 10 hours of English lessons per week, we aim to comprehensively develop our students' language skills. Of these lessons, 5 hours focus on grammar, 3 hours on reading and writing skills, and 2 hours on speaking and listening skills. Our students are taught in different level-appropriate classes, so that each student progresses with a curriculum appropriate to his/her language level. This level structure helps each student to make the most of their potential.

In reading classes, our students have the opportunity to study world-renowned literary works. Classic works such as Jane Austen, William Shakespeare's Hamlet, The Brontë Sisters and similar classics allow our students to develop their reading skills and broaden their cultural perspectives at the same time. These works provide linguistic richness and encourage students to develop an in-depth understanding of the world of literature.

In addition, integrated with other subjects such as Science and Geography, our students engage in interactive activities focusing on different scientific topics each week. In these courses, students learn scientific and technological terms in English, while also having the opportunity to develop their thinking skills through group work and discussions. This interdisciplinary approach reinforces both the linguistic and academic development of our students.

Language Level Target

At the end of Grade 8, we aim for our students to achieve B1 Plus proficiency in English. Students who reach this level graduate as individuals who can understand and interpret complex texts in daily life and academic contexts, express their ideas clearly and effectively, and make detailed explanations in writing and orally on different topics. In line with this goal, we follow each student's personal development, reinforce their strengths and provide support in areas that need improvement.
